The Truth about Diet and Weight Loss

I want to talk tonight about weight loss. It’s a subject everyone is worried about. And the problem is that diets don’t work. Everybody has tried a diet. I haven’t met a person yet that’s hasn’t tried something, from kids to people in their eighties; everybody has tried some kind of diet and they just don’t work. In recent studies when they looked at a lot of their major diets (some good one’s, Atkins, The Zone), they put them all together statistically and found a ten pound weight loss on average. Now, these people lost a hundred pounds and gained it back of course. But, all that work, all that money, all those videos, for ten pounds of weight loss?

So the truth is, we have to find a life style that will allow you to stay at a weight that is healthy for you. That’s a much different way of thinking than all this crash dieting that goes on. What you have to learn is how to take care of yourself; you have to learn the appropriate foods; you have to make better choices. That’s the only way it’s going to work.

Drowning in Anthropogenic CO2

We hear a lot about anthropogenic (manmade) CO2 and its probable devastating effect(s). (Please read the rest.)
In this video taken by me, I present a case that we are already drowning ourselves in manmade carbon-di-oxide (CO2) by having large number of people breathing in unventilated or poorly ventilated enclosed spaces such as classrooms, offices and transport carriages. But seldom, if ever, you have heard anything about it. I might not have bothered myself with it except for having personal experience.
This video shows the Physics Lab of Merton College, Morden, Surrey, SM4 5SE, UK. It was taken with a GO!Cam attached to a PSP on 15 July 2008.
This lab is in a modern looking, shinny, brand new building. But people forgot to put adequate ventilation. You can look at the building by going to www.merton.ac.uk. It is great to look at from outside. But ventilation is very inadequate, at least in the Physics Lab where I used to spend most of my working, about 25-26, hours per week.
I am not presenting this as a unique case. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of modern and not adequately ventilated buildings, transport carriages and even our homes. Compare the windows of old office or school buildings, buses, railway carriages etc with the windows of the similar but new ones. You surely will find that the older ones windows could be opened wider and they were larger in size. It appears that we have been developing an aversion to fresh air.
Also please consider that we now mostly live and work indoors particularly in the so-called developed world. And obesity and Type 2 diabetes have been rising exponentially.
Now why should there be any connection between spending long hours in CO2 rich and oxygen deprived environment with ill health? Think!
We need energy to do anything. Our body processes food to produce sugar (glucose). Glucose and insulin are carried by our blood to the cells. There glucose burns with oxygen producing CO2 and water.
In an enclosed space as we breathe we use up oxygen and produce more CO2 and water. Without proper ventilation, oxygen level drops. Less oxygen means less burning of glucose that means less energy and we get tired. Un-burnt sugar gets stored as fat and/or increases blood glucose level. Excess fat means obesity and excess blood sugar means Type 2 diabetes, even when body can produce insulin but cannot use it due to lack of oxygen. Please read the article Oxygen and Diabetes. Please look at the answer to the question, ‘Dr. Avshalumov, why should a lack of oxygen in the body influence the start of diabetes type 2?’

Now look around and think for yourselves. Are modern buildings properly ventilated? Do these places get measured for oxygen level and/or CO2 level in relation to the possible number of occupants and their intended activities? I hazard to guess that most are not. At least my lab was not tested, even after I had complained.
Please do not take my words or this video to be definitive. I’m a physicist and a teacher, not an expert on obesity and/or diabetes. I am just trying to raise a legitimate issue regarding public health, particularly that of our children who do not have a political voice to force any change. You do your research. If you are obese and/or Type 2 diabetic talk to your physician and see what they say. After that, if possible try to do something. Health of you and your children may be in serious danger.
