  1. How can I lose weight without gaining muscle?
    Hi, All!

I am 17 years old, 165 cm tall (approx 5′5") and 70 kg (approx 154 lb)
I have been doing an hour of exercise everyday since 4 January 2010. I am using a cross/elliptical trainer at home (Insight E7000P) and I use one of their default programs where they alter the resistance/load every so many seconds.

I do this for an hour everyday but I don’t do an hour straight (I don’t think that’s good for me). I break it up into sessions. For a while it was 10 mins, 15 mins, 10 mins, 15 mins, 10 mins. Just today, I started doing four 15 minute sessions.

Usually I burn 750 - 850 calories (according to the calorie counter on the cross trainer) and I’m eating less. However, I have only lost 1kg (2.2 lb) in the space of two weeks. I was wondering if there was anything I should change? Maybe I’m just expecting results too quickly? Or maybe I am losing fat but gaining muscle and I don’t want that. So is there anyway I can lose weight without gaining muscle? Oh wait. Maybe I’m eating the wrong foods? I’m eating the same foods that mum makes for lunch and dinner but I am eating less of it. Because I am of Chinese descent, Rice is always consumed during a meal. Is that okay?

My Dad is also taking a similar exercise program and has been doing so for the same amount of time as me. He previously weighed around 83kg (182.6 lb) and now weighs approx 79kg (173.8 lb). Why is it that he can acheive such results? My first guess is that he an full grown adult male with more fat so he can burn fat more easily than me.

My goal weight is around 62 kg (136.4 lb) and I want to reach that goal by June 2010.

Any tips or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated!
@ ceiling cat: I’m not much of a muscular woman fan. I would like to be toned and fit but not muscular. I’m not trying to offend any muscular women out there! These are just my personal preferences.

  7. An elliptical trainer will not add much muscle and any muscle it does add will be in all the right places so you shouldn’t worry about that at all.

Rice has a lot of fiber and some protein (although not all amino acids) so it isn’t so bad.

if you eat chinese food, try to add less oil and uses oils with healthy fats, not bad ones http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=532

Your weight should come off. Make sure you drink plenty of water and sleep enough.

You can certainly make your goal by June.

  8. What you need to is something called interval training. This involves running at a very high speed, then having a rest period. I find 1min fast, 1min slow is good or 1min 30 fast 30secs slow. This burns way more calories then jogging a constant speed as your heart rate is always changing. Or in your case on a cross trainer.

You need to eat a big breakfast to fuel yourself for the day and speed up your metabolism, meaning you will burn calories quicker. Then have a medium size lunch and something really small for dinner. Try avoiding too many carbs and stick to protein.

Also if you want to burn excess weight find out how many calories you are consuming a day, then deduct 500 calories to create a defect which will make weight loss even easier.

  9. Yoga. It forces muscles to stretch and loosen, which in turn burns fat up because it is no easy thing to do, and so you’ll gain flexibility and loose weight, while being able to decide how much you strain yourself.

Don’t make it the only thing you do, but as gentle as yoga seems, it is actully a surprisingly effective workout. And it’ll get your muscles to work without bulking them up.
